South Road
From DQWiki
Created over a period of only a few weeks in the Autumn of 801, the South Road is the product of the fantastical "Road Builder" or "Straßengebäudemaschine" constructed by the MMHS Mechanicians Guild.
Running out of control on what was intended to be its first full test, the machine laid down a 5 yard wide strip of roadway by magically "melting" the ground (resulting in a seamless stony surface), while simultaneously clearing the ground (and effectively "scarring terrain") for another 10 yards either side. Stone-like bridges were built across streams and even rivers, and for much of the road's length it runs in precisely straight lines. (There are however a few sections where the road turns in circles over several square miles, and one where a former village was turned into one large town square).
Beginning at Fort Boris the road runs due south into Bowcourt, through Remy before angling south-east and crossing the Montrachet River north of Vallon. It then turns almost due east through a section of County Chagny before abruptly changing course south once more, crossing the North Road and heading directly for the city of Campagnol in the Viscounty of Vole.
At Campagnol the road turns in a wide arc around the city (due to the hasty construction of magical defences) before disappearing into the dense woods south of the city. The full extent of the road may be seen on the map of Bowcourt.
The Road Builder subsequently passed through an ancient portal in the woods and vanished.
Although the course of the South Road was not a planned one, and it fails to connect most significant settlements, there is still trade on it due to its all-weather availability and fast transport speeds, and over time it is likely that various settlements will make increasing use of it, and inns will be constructed to benefit from the traffic.
