Portals are magical constructions that allow rapid travel between two different places, sometimes on the same plane, sometimes between planes.
Rune Mages are able to construct portals that reach many miles on the same plane.
Some powerful shapers are (or were) able to construct portals between planes.
Some ancient artifacts and powerful shaped items are able to open portals a long way on the same plane or to different planes.
Some portals seem to occur naturally, because of mana storms, or uncreditted acts of god.
